Downloading to the Macintosh Palace Client v3.5+

In December 2000 Communities.com shut off the ad server which, unfortunately, also prevented the Mac 3.5 client from downloading room pictures, etc., from the server. Although the older clients do not have this problem the Macintosh Palace users should use the v3.5+ client because it is much more stable than the older clients and provides error messages.

The following procedure corrects the downloading problem and eliminates the ads should they start again:

1. Use Find-File to see if you have a file named 'Hosts' in your System folder or your System-Preferences folder.

If you have a Hosts file add the following line of text to it:

paps.thepalace.com A 127.0.0.1

( Use a tab between 'paps.thepalace.com' and 'A' and between 'A' and '127.0.0.1'. Use a carriage return at the end of the line.)

If you do not have a 'Hosts' file create one with the above line in it or download mine . If you create one, use SimpleText or BBedit or any other word processor that does not use a proprietary file format. Note: Microsoft Word does use a proprietary file format so don't use it. Put the Hosts file in your System-Preferences folder.

2. If your system uses TCP/IP:

Open the TCP/IP Control Panel (Apple-Control Panels-TCP/IP)

Click on "Select Hosts File".

Navigate to the Hosts file and select it.

When asked if you really want to replace the Hosts file click on 'OK'.

If your system does not use TCP/IP:

Restart your Mac.
